One wall has a drop-leaf table to allow room for traffic and serve as a desk for guests when needed. It's also where the router and modem hang out, like so:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313170925.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313170925.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Other than being completely uninspiring, this set-up is annoying when the boxes are flashing lights in the dark. Dad had taken to covering them up with whatever was handy when guests came to stay. It was pretty sad, so I decided to put a few minutes into creating a solution for them.<br />
<br />
This little desk organizer from Organized Living had outlived its usefulness for me due to color scheme changes and a few stains on the top and front.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171310.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171310.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
So I just removed the drawers and put the router and modem in the empty slots, with the back of the box facing the room. No cutting holes for cords required (yay).<br />
<br />
A friend of the family who passed away with cancer had once spent an afternoon painting with Mom and let Mom keep the watercolor she made. It is so charming and impressive for someone who had never painted before. I'd been meaning to get it framed but hadn't really had a plan for where it should go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171135.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Now that I was focusing on the guest room, I realized the colors were pretty perfect for the space. A quick trip to Michael's got me this poster frame for $12.99.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171199.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171199.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
It is pretty cheaply made, to be honest, but the look is good for the price.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171488.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Then I just added some flowers, a tray and a glass Mom already had.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171416.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171416.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
It was a fun update in less than an hour, including the shopping!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/guestwall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="283" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/guestwall.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I might have to do something crafty to break up the blocks of orange and black. But the parents like it so far.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171380.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1313171380.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Happy weekend, everyone!<br />

This adorable collection by D-Signed for girls is full of trendy but easy to mix basics. How cute is that blazer?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/Dsignedgirlscollection.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="332" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/Dsignedgirlscollection.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
It's surprising how much better the women's clothes look in person than on the website. There really are some super cute, decent-quality pieces. Here are a few things I talked my sweet mom into grabbing for herself at the store the other day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/orangetank.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/orangetank.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
If the detail was clearer you would see that those round medallions are teal blue and kelly green. We paired this tank with a rolled-sleeve teal cardi that hangs long and grey or khaki trousers. I will have to get pics of her modeling later.<br />
<br />
This next tank also looks stunning with the same teal cardi and neutral pants. The fringe of round cut-outs (I want to call them paillettes but obviously they aren't shiny) is the prettiest detail in person. This top looks expensive and has a cute bronze ball button in the back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/beigeprinttank.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/beigeprinttank.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>The next combo we came up with was a cool abstract print tee and a lemon cardi. Paired with dark jeans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/greyteeyellowcardi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/greyteeyellowcardi.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>She also snagged this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/blueprintcardi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/blueprintcardi.jpg" width="314" /></a></div><br />
and I took this one for me...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/greyprintcardi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/greyprintcardi.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Here is an unexpectedly nice classic piece if you don't already have something similar. Great for now or layering year-round. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/whiteruffletank.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/whiteruffletank.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Update on the nightstand from Home Goods: Painting commenced right away, but the heat dome has prevented any painting outside for awhile. I'm hoping there will be a few minutes of painting time in the next couple nights to finish it up so I can post the results early next week.A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-46169679055997395082011-07-29T23:58:00.001-05:002011-08-01T01:10:45.862-05:00AcquiredHomegoods really delivered last weekend. I found three adorable things that I could not leave without.<br />
<br />
1. Quatrefoil urn:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/urn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/urn.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>My immediate plan was to paint this baby yellow and add a laquer coat. But the silver is starting to grow on me. We shall see if I go crazy with the paint this weekend. $39.99<br />
<br />
2. Cute side table/stool that Imma use as a night stand:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/newcutetable.jpg?t=1312000776" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/newcutetable.jpg?t=1312000776" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>It was $35 on clearance! The grey is lovely but won't work for my bedroom. Trying to decide on a color.<br />
<br />
3. Sweet little bust:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1311999879.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/1311999879.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
I've been on the hunt for one of these for a while. This one is petite and makes me laugh because the ponytail bun style is basically what I rock daily and doesn't strike me as a hairstyle used in the ancient days of busts and robes. She was marked at only $12 and I got 20% off that because of some black marks on the front edge which are hardly noticeable and might scrub off.<br />
<br />
A couple other acquisitions will be featured soon but they were not part of the Homegoods loot. Also in the works is some DIY art. WHO KNOWS how this will turn out.A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-37258793405101586342011-07-18T22:41:00.000-05:002011-07-18T22:41:22.457-05:00Now I get why pillows cost an arm and a leg and your faceI bought some Robert Allen ikat fabric months ago, intending to make some pillows. But this was not a project I wanted to attempt alone, so I waited for Mom to be here and willing to help (read: show me how and fix my mistakes). I also changed my mind about the number and shape and size of the pillows a few times. Eventually I decided a body pillow would have a nice impact on a queen-size bed.<br />
<br />
Sewing machines and I do not co-exist well. Their parts aren't labeled. You need an engineering degree to thread them. And there are 5 billion things to adjust. Whenever Mom would walk away, inevitably I had to yell questions to her in the next room like:<i> "Where did the lever to raise the foot go?!"</i> This is what happens when you sew about three times per decade. You forget everything.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_1340.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_1340.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> Anyway, thanks entirely to Mom, the finished product actually looks like a pillow. And I love it. O. Is that upside down? Here it is turned around.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_1353.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_1353.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Obviously I need to style this area. It won't look plain and white forever. I need to bring in some more pattern and color and sconces and bedside tables. Can't wait. Especially since those things don't require sewing.A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-6119770729211794622011-07-15T03:07:00.003-05:002011-08-01T01:14:07.614-05:00Workin' It<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/inspiration-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/inspiration-1.jpg" width="427" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I have probably nothing in common with Kim Kardashian except height and body type. Unfortunately, the size and shape of my body has of late morphed into something unfamiliar to me. And it looks not-so-much like the above amazing photo. <i> </i><br />
<br />
<i>Which is all about to change! </i><br />
<br />
Here is what's going to make it happen:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/cookbook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/cookbook.jpg" width="241" /></a></div><br />
<br />
1. Eating paleo. More specifically, primal. Basically, no grains or dairy or sugar or caffeine and lots of yummy protein and veggies and fat. And temporarily holding off on the fruit. This book is supposed to be amazing (people actually use most of the recipes instead of one or two).<br />
<i> </i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<i> </i><a href="http://www.marksdailyapple.com/">Mark's Daily Apple</a> is a fantastically informative site with a daily blog all about how to live primal. This will help answer a lot of questions not covered in his books.<br />
<br />
2. The most amazing boot-camp style gym ever. It's called <a href="http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/what-crossfit.html">CrossFit</a>, and if you're super lucky, there is one near you. If you aren't that lucky, the site has loads of videos to show you how to do some things at home. Don't be turned off by the amateur looking graphics. This is a hard-core and fast way to get in shape. Pro athletes, police, fire and special military forces use CrossFit. As do grandmas.<br />
<br />
So far I am having a blast. Getting through a class makes me feel like this dude.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTvwEJt9w31dTaMiw5XKbrtav0bqpsU0TmBAANzI3Eo1HIaUThoqA" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTvwEJt9w31dTaMiw5XKbrtav0bqpsU0TmBAANzI3Eo1HIaUThoqA" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
And like a survivor. Who has an amazing natural high and wants to go dancing...possibly like this guy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/M23XYcBsgOg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
<br />
At least on the days I am not sore and/or shaking. Already I am getting stronger and can do a billion sit-ups. And push-ups are actually <i>fun.</i><br />
<br />
And eating a green leafy salad piled with avocado and red peppers and roasted chicken or tuna or salmon and olive oil is the most satisfying thing ever. Well. One of them.<br />
<br />
Best of luck to anyone else out there making changes and feeling strong! I'm counting the days (literally...my calendar is marked with weekly goals) until this happens:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/inspiration-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/inspiration-1.jpg" width="427" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I mean. Look at that waist. Yes, please.<br />
<br />
P.S. Apologies for months of silence. I had some personal things going on. And at this point, I'm not even going to try to post daily. Just when things happen. Toodles.A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-46942572159265002232011-02-18T02:44:00.000-06:002011-02-18T02:44:07.720-06:00Last (half) day of Kate's sample sale...just in case you didn't know.<br />
<br />
I didn't see anything I had to have, but there are some deals to be had. Notice it ends at noon, not midnight. Good luck! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/katesamplesale.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="376" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/katesamplesale.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-50991646879490221752011-02-17T22:36:00.000-06:002011-02-17T22:36:26.473-06:00Things I saw while out shoppingThese make me want to forgo making the pillow from the bulletin board fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/homegoodspillows.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/homegoodspillows.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
You can see there is a striped version in the same colorway underneath them.<br />
<br />
<br />
These tablecloths are a cheap fabric option for pillows or some other small project:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/yellowtablecloth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/yellowtablecloth.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bluetablecloth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bluetablecloth.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Also of note: there are some cute things for little girls in the Valentine's clearance section at Target. Bright stripes, floral and heart patterned things like shower curtains and tablecloths and pillows. There are also faux fur throws in pink. Everything is 30-50% off. <br />

Tonight I finally took some shots in poor light, so we'll have to just live with that until the next round of updated things happens (which should be soon).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0672.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0672.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Magenta acrylic paint on the frame, gray grosgrain ribbon , and a fabric from JoAnne's called tropical something or other. I can find the name when I go back to look for curtain fabric this week.<br />
<br />
I haven't decided if/where to mount the boards, so for now one is propped up above my desk and one is being useless lying on top of the printer. They are so small that I can't bring myself to pin anything on them and cover up that fun pattern yet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0671.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0671.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />
Even though I only bought a yard of the fabric, there is enough left over for a throw pillow or two for the bed. Here is the current bed situation:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0663.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0663.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>A little boring, right? Need to work on that. [Note wet spot from doggy nose. She kept jumping into the shot.]<br />
<br />
At the foot of the bed is a trunk I keep my underpinnings in. It's the same red as my parson's desk, which you might get to see if I ever get my cords under control. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0667.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0667.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />
Here is the yellow fabric with the bed to give me an idea of what the pillow will be like. Say hello to Lucy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0674.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0674.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />
Yes, she does have eyes, I promise. <br />
<br />
While the sewing machine is out for the pillow(s), there might be some window treatment action as well. The window behind this chair lets in far too much light in the morning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0675.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/IMG_0675.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />
There are blinds I'd like to cover with a fabric shade...maybe in a gray geometric pattern. Then some blackout curtains would be life-changing. I could go bright or black with those. We'll see.A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-86580500155387367402011-02-10T22:25:00.000-06:002011-02-10T22:25:29.156-06:00It's my birthday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/cake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/cake.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.bestbirthdaycakes.onsugar.com/">via</a> </div><br />
I crammed this day full of my favorite activity: sleep! It was blissful, to be honest. <br />
<br />
Pics of the bulletin boards tomorrow when there is better light.<br />
<br />
Still looking for advice on the side table situation from yesterday, smart people!A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-46910195220469646792011-02-10T00:14:00.000-06:002011-02-10T00:14:30.266-06:00I want thisPics of the humble mini-project are coming soon. Bad weather has been keeping my very inquisitive puppy inside and up in my business all week, so it's hard to find opportunity for messy things like paint and glue.<br />
<br />
I decided I need to upgrade my nightstand situation from the plastic and MDF Container Store cabinet to something nicer. Maybe something shiny and sophisticated. Maybe a round brass and glass campaign side table. It turns out they are crazy expensive (for me).<br />
<br />
But then I saw this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/UOsidetable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/UOsidetable.jpg" width="207" /></a></div><br />
which is a lot cheaper than this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/expensivesidetable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/expensivesidetable.jpg" width="248" /></a></div><br />
Hmmm. Does anyone know if it would be feasible to try to brass-i-fy the first one? With gold paint maybe? If so, I think I could like this accordian style instead of the campaign one. <br />

The striped and the equestrian totes were not there. The dreamy cognac bag...was a heartbreaking, utter disappointment. It is ugly and fake. I spotted it from the door and it was dreamy from there, but from a few feet away, it's obviously crap. Le sigh.<br />
<br />
But onward! In the beauty clearance section I spied the Sonia Kashuk duffel bag I'd been wanting for 30% off. Yes, thanks! It is huge for a cosmetic travel bag, but small for a regular duffel bag (perfect for a carry-on flight bag). Super lightweight, and it comes with two small bags for little liquid toiletries (the bags are velcro'ed to the inside--genius). Sadly, it's no longer available online.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/duffelbag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/duffelbag.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>I also scored two bulletin boards for $2.50 each. I've been wanting to do a big, fabric-covered board forever...so many adorable ones in the blogosphere. But these two smaller ones together should work out fine. Tomorrow I'll head to JoAnne's...I was doubtful of the selection, but I just saw this swatch:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/pinkgeometricfabric.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/pinkgeometricfabric.jpg" width="196" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
...over at <a href="http://framingspaces.blogspot.com/">Framing Spaces</a>, and that has given me hope. I might just go with that fabric unless I find a royal blue geometric pattern that wins me over. Then I'll need some ribbon to trim it out and a little craft paint for the frame.<br />
<br />
P.S. If I don't post the results soon, it's a safe bet that I have had a fatal crafting accident. I am not like the rest of you, who can whip up a houseful of drapes in a morning or upholster a chair in ten minutes. It is much more likely that I will end up glued to the cork and the floor and the table, with ribbon tangled in my hair and limbs and a wild look in my eyes.A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-76817680534207937372011-02-03T18:15:00.002-06:002011-02-14T22:33:22.219-06:00You're kidding, right?Target is debuting these gorgeous bags sometime soon. Prepare for jaw-droppage.<br />
<br />

Just when I had convinced myself that I had all possible bag-needs covered, and was hoping to keep a very condensed closet...I now desperately want the first one. I hope I hope it doesn't disappoint in person.<br />

Pretty funny stuff.<br />
<br />
Busts that aren't too formal or militant or old-school-Greek can be cool in the right setting...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom3.jpg" width="566" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom2.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="516" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="498" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="570" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>I don't like the bust-on-a-column look so much. DO love the white-bust-against-white-walls-or-bookshelf look! A playful, modern setting seems to work best. <br />
<br />
Here's a definite don't in my book:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/bustroom4.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>It's just too much like the hall of heads in Return of Oz...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/facehall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/facehall.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
[That movie is the reason I never saw the original Wizard of Oz. So much creepiness!]<br />
<br />
I couldn't find any guy busts I liked for sale, but here are three pretty females.<br />

Right now I'm wearing a guy's (no particular guy, just <i>made for </i>a guy) white undershirt, loose gray linen Banana Republic pants, thick socks, and a much thicker robe from Restoration Hardware. Could I be more comfy? It's doubtful. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: black;">Even if it isn't freezing inside, something about winter draws me to soft, easy, sometimes drapey fabrics. Forget anything that needs to be tugged and pulled. No thanks, button-up anything. I plan on sitting Indian-style all winter in my most comfortable clothes. How about you?</span><br />

Yellow is one of those unique colors that works both as a surprising pop of color and also seems to go with almost every other color out there...could we call it a neutral? Maybe not, but it works with so many things. I was grieved when my mustard shoulder bag had to be retired from over-use...it went with nearly every outfit I owned in any season.<br />
<br />
Yellow may not be the most flattering color for a lot of us (definitely it doesn't flatter me), but it's so fun to have around, whether in a clothing accessory or a throw pillow. I'm hoping for the bright diary below for a birthday present next month...it'll be cheery on my nightstand.<br />

This year, family came to visit for New Years instead of Christmas.<br />
<br />
The table looked a little sparse this time around. A centerpiece was forgotten, but somehow I liked it anyway. Usually I go for color, but white and gold were calling. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/IMG_0493.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/IMG_0493.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
My table is the Irish farmhouse from WSH years ago. I adore the width of it...when it isn't so decorated, you can fit tons of food in the middle. The chairs were a cheap thrift store deal. Three of the cane-backs are ripped, so slipcovers had to happen. I loathe those slipcovers now and am debating whether fixing the cane or padding and upholstering would be worth it or whether I should spring for new chairs altogether.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/IMG_0489.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/IMG_0489.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The dishes are plain white Ikea. The goldware was a wedding gift for my parents back in the Jurassic period. I totally rolled with un-ironed napkins. The runners I cut from this gold burlap-ish stuff. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/IMG_0494.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/IMG_0494.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These gold candlesticks were my late adopted grandmother's (she was a much-beloved neighbor). I tossed on some snowflakes and jingle bells and was done! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The wreath was extra large and fragrant this year, and we found the prettiest silvery-green ribbon. Unfortunately it was past its prime by the time I got a shot of it. Ignore the ugly rental-house door. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

And I'm always on the lookout for the <i>ideal</i> layout...the one that is super-practical for how people live and yet still pretty.<br />
<br />
Here's a very laughable, badly-done and horribly off-scale one I did in Paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/houseplan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/houseplan.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>The entry is the most important difference between mine and all the blueprints I've seen. I'd love an entry that is for guests <i>and</i> the people who live there. There should be a place to put all the stuff that people carry in and there should be a restroom close-by.<br />
<br />
So the boxes with "cc" on them are supposed to be coat closets: one for the family to store their outerwear and boots in, and one to stay empty and ready for guests' stuff. Then there is the powder room on the left and immediately ahead is a built-in console that is actually half-desk in the office. This is for the mail, the bag, the keys, the gadgets that need to be dumped. I love that you can just walk into the office and process all that stuff instead of having to carry it to another location.<br />
<br />
And the groceries don't have far to travel; the kitchen is right around the corner. I'd have no front-porch steps to interfere with a cart to bring the groceries in with. <br />
<br />
The butler's pantry is another favorite. Lots of built-ins for all the serveware, nice dishes and flatware and glassware. And a wet bar. Mayyybe a dishwasher. The dining room would have a bar cart for rolling food and dishes back and forth. <br />
<br />
I'd also love a living room that can comfortably seat 8-10 people, or accommodate 2-3 lounging people. Here's something thrown together just to show furniture arrangement...the colors/patterns aren't important.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/ideallayout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="449" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/ideallayout.jpg" width="640" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Ideally, everyone would have a seat-back (no stools or benches or cushioned ottomans for seating). I'm not sold on a chaise for that reason...maybe another two chairs should be in front of the fire instead. Lots of big windows behind the sofa, and in front of the console table, french doors leading out to the side porch. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The master closet would be great if it would house <i>all </i>clothes, so that there would be no dresser in the bedroom, and the whole dressing ordeal could take place in the same space. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I'm thinking I'd eliminate that hallway between the laundry room and the office to make the laundry twice as big. Then there'd be room for laundry sorting bins and shelves and a utility sink and drying rack for delicates.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Sketching out and dreaming of house-plans is so much fun! </div>A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-47391227258578760242011-01-04T19:54:00.003-06:002011-01-05T07:40:20.387-06:00HoneysuckleSo Pantone picked the color of the year...and it's so fun and happy! Here's hoping 2011 will be the same, at least in parts, for everyone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/honeysucklepink.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="385" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/honeysucklepink.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I boarded the love train for this color already...with 2 shirts, a wallet, a pair of tights, and most recently a pair of convertible mittens from the dollar bin at Target. That phone pouch was on my wish list, and I planned on buying it myself if Santa didn't bring it...sadly, it's temporarily out of stock. Who knew I had so much pink.<br />
<br />
O! How could I forget the fabulous paintings from Nicole Cohen? They would be the very ultimate way to bring honeysuckle into your life.<br />

This is one of those times.<br />
<br />
I came across <a href="http://alifemorefabulous.blogspot.com/2010/12/new-years-party-inspiration-from-kevin.html">this post</a> at the very cool and lovely blog, escapade. A post about being inspired by some pics of Kevin Sharkey's housewarming party. I adore escapade and I adore Kevin's work too. And I can understand being inspired by a fun, casual, light-hearted party. But my happy scrolling screeched to a halt at this pic:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/showerboxes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/showerboxes.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>Not because the champagne is chilling in the bathtub (fun, I get it). Or because Alexis and Kevin are chilling on the bathroom floor (oh, look, they can be even more regular than non-rich regular people). No, I can let these slide. It is the pretentious, stupid, useless, ever-present pile of Hermes boxes. Now, whenever I see a pic including unnecessary Hermes boxes, I have an eye-roll moment. I'd like to think peeps are using the boxes for organized storage of lots of little things. Even storage of the actual original purchases (but, o, no...I need to find that one scarf, but it will take me an hour to open all these boxes)...Whatever, I'm down with pretty storage. But I doubt it. How would they know which box holds what? They're never labeled. They are just a very orange way of saying "I spend a lot of money." Anyway. Back to this particular photo.<br />
<br />
The boxes are stacked...<i>in the shower.</i> For real? Is this a permanent display, Kevin? Or is it a last-minute solution to cover up a cracked floor tile? I can't imagine either scenario really. "Hmmmm....what could make a champagne-in-the-bathtub-and-cute-partiers-on-the-floor-in-formal-wear-more-interesting? I KNOW! Very expensive empty boxes in that one foot of space behind Kevin's head!"<br />
<br />
So I'm angry. I scroll back to look at the other shots of the party, and the more I look at them, the more they start to irritate me too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/balloonsinyourface.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/balloonsinyourface.jpg" width="514" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Balloons in everyone's faces. Because this is how people like to party. Crowded in a hallway with no personal space and balloon strings in your eye.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/partycookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/partycookies.jpg" width="512" /></a></div><br />
Nothing is more appetizing and festive than a stack of dry store-bought cookies. But let's put some fireworks on top to be sure. And here's a good idea: drinking milk with champagne.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/pingpong.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/pingpong.jpg" width="512" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
Okay. This...I can get behind. Ping pong? Fun. Writing on a mirror with lipstick? Really fun! Using your probably very nice dining table <i>as </i>a ping pong table? Well. I guess if tables are disposable to you, or you're going for a rustic, banged-up look. I guess.<br />
<br />
But! <i>These </i>are the score-writing lipsticks selected.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/lipsticktray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/lipsticktray.jpg" width="512" /></a></div><br />
Yep, that's right. Chanel. Which there had to be a styled photo of. That's about $180 worth of score-keeping crayons right there. Maybe more. How...creative. How...spontaneous.<br />
<br />
So this party, with its cheap cookies and balloons, its humble bathroom home for the drinks, its devil-may-care, my-furniture-isn't-too precious vibe, still manages to reek of pretentiousness and overkill and wastefulness. For me.<br />
<br />
I realize that all design is on that slippery slope of unnecessary materialism, and people have different ideas about where to draw the line. So what turns your stomach? Do you have aversions to design that seems showy? What qualifies as ridiculous and what is just divinely delicious and okay to long for?A.S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14443985964455469045noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164841696598692134.post-75686332703889883432010-12-30T10:38:00.000-06:002010-12-30T10:38:20.410-06:00DenmarkIn honor of Aunt Esther, who died of breast cancer. <br />

My paternal grandfather was part Welsh.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
He was the life of the party, always joking and charismatic. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="454" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
He died from complications of alcoholism, even though he quit a few years before. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
He passed when my dad was eighteen years old.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb205/pippa76/blog/wales6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The pain that alcoholism causes a family lasts for generations.<br />
